The Broadway Market, Train Show: A 125th Anniversary Celebration Event
100 years ago the Broadway Market was uprooted by a railroad crisis. The railroad was an integral part of the sustainability of the Broadway Market. In 1913 the railroad industry was shut down for a short time and unemployed railroad workers rioted at the Market.
On September 6th & 7th, this year the Market will again be taken over by rail road enthusiasts. The Market’s proximity to the Central Terminal allowed the Broadway Market area to flourish as the second largest Polish immigrant population in America. The Central Terminal built Buffalo. Immigrants flocked to the east side of Buffalo from the late 1800′s until today, keeping their customs in their new environment. The new and second generation of immigrants still flock to Buffalo Market for the best of their ethnic heritage. The Broadway Market has kept pace continuing to serve the needs of all immigrants.
Formally held at the Central Terminal, this year’s Train Show will be at the Broadway Market 999 Broadway, Buffalo. The show will have over 50 vendors and a train display, photo opportunities for children as well as toy trains for children to enjoy. “We are so excited to have the train show at Buffalo’s Market, as well as, vendors the Central Terminal Train Show,” stated Sophie Baj, President of the Friends of the Broadway Market District, ” The Market has much to offer children, such as Strawberry Island, Melanie Sweets and Niagara Popcorn.” A door prize will be given away every hour and 2 grand prize gift certificates from Niagara Hobby & Craft Mart.
It is an exhilarating 125th Anniversary year, celebrating the ethnic old world shopping atmosphere. The Broadway Market’s fresh food merchant base is comprised of family-owned, family-operated butcher shops, poultry stands, fruit, vegetable stands and bakeries. Although the Market site has undergone-numerous changes over time, three different physical structures in fact, the old-fashioned concept of selling farm fresh, exotic and unusual products has remained unchanged since the Market’s inception.
“This will be one of a kind in Buffalo,” stated Beverly Mclean, the 125th Anniversary Committee, “The Broadway Market, 125th Anniversary Committee is proud to continue the legacy of the Train Show on the east side, without a cover charge.” Buffalo’s legacy of railroads and trains with the Central Terminal just a few blocks from Buffalo’s Market on the east side of Buffalo. The Train Show is open to everyone on September 6th & 7th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The only free train show of its kind in Western New York.
Some of the Market’s Fall activities will be happening around the 125th Anniversary Celebration of the Broadway Market:
· 9/14 St. Ann’s, Second Saturday Lecture; Dr. Martin Ederer will the speaker on September 14th at noon in the Broadway Market Community Room. He will discuss the history of St. Ann’s church, German immigration in the area and the current status regarding proposed demolition of the architectural structure.
· 10/12 Polish National, Second Saturday Lecture – October 12th Breakfast at 10 am – The world premier of Eddy Zawadzki’s new book “Pole’s in the New World.”
· 10/12 “The Kielbasa Diaries, A butter lamb lies down on Broadway,” a single act site-based play, an oral history of the Broadway Market, written by Steve Roylance. Opening Premier and VIP Reception will be held on October 12th at 3:00 P.M.
· 10/18 A 125th Anniversary Gala, highlighting the history and cuisine of the Market, which will be held on October 18th at 6:00 PM -9PM.
